It’s another delicious addition to your collection of morning smoothie recipes that tastes like a creamy Orange Julius but with more nutrients to power your day.

And if you’ve got any lingering mandarin oranges, this mandarin chicken salad or orange creamsicle overnight oats will hit the spot.

Mandarin Breakfast Smoothie Ingredients

You’ll just need a handful of ingredients for this creamy, citrusy smoothie. Here’s what’s in it.

  • Milk: Non-dairy milks are my personal preference, but dairy works as well.
  • Yogurt: Both dairy or non-dairy yogurts alike will help make this deliciously creamy and give a boost of probiotics.
  • Mandarin Oranges: They’re smaller and naturally sweeter than navel oranges. Plus, they’re easy to peel!
  • Banana: It’s loaded with vitamins, potassium, and of course, will amp up the creaminess factor.
  • Ground Flaxseeds: These little seeds are loaded with omega-3’s, fiber, and other nutrients. If you don’t have them, you can use chia seeds as well.
  • Vanilla Extract: A splash of this gives the smoothie a sweet touch.

Mandarins vs Tangerines vs Clementines

It can get confusing as all these little oranges do look awfully similar to one another. So to clear up some of that confusion, think of it this way – mandarins are type of orange and the name for an overarching category of small oranges.

Tangerines are a form of mandarins, with a sweet-tart flavor. Clementine “cuties” are the smallest type of mandarin with an extra glossy peel and super sweet insides. And satsumas are a very tender, easy to peel, juicy mandarin. Tangerines, clementines, and satusmas are all mandarins. But not all mandarins are tangerines (or clementines or satsumas). Make sense?

So which mandarins should you use in this recipe? Any of the above! They all work great. So grab what’s in season or on sale.

    I made mine with almond milk, can of mandarin oranges, vanilla protein, triple omega seeds, the Greek yogurt and frozen banana.
